Jewellery for Sensitive Skin: Your Guide to Hypoallergenic Gold in Australia

Skin reactions to jewellery are incredibly common — an estimated 17% of women and 3% of men have a nickel allergy, which is the most frequent cause of contact dermatitis from jewellery. If you've experienced redness, itching, swelling, or a rash from wearing jewellery, you're far from alone. Here's how to navigate the jewellery market safely.

The Main Culprit: Nickel

Nickel is used in the alloy base of most cheap jewellery because it's inexpensive and durable. It's found in brass, some stainless steel alloys, white gold, and the base metals beneath thin gold plating. When the gold plating wears off — which happens quickly with standard electroplating — the nickel base comes into contact with skin, causing the classic reaction: redness, itching, and green discolouration on the skin.

Safe Metals for Sensitive Skin

The metals least likely to cause skin reactions are: pure gold (24K, 22K, 18K), sterling silver (92.5% pure silver), titanium, surgical stainless steel (316L grade), and platinum. The key is that none of these contain nickel in significant quantities. Gold vermeil uses a sterling silver base — which is why it is categorised as hypoallergenic.

Why Gold Vermeil is Different from Gold Plated for Sensitive Skin

Standard gold plating over brass will eventually cause reactions in nickel-sensitive people because the base metal contains nickel and the plating will wear. Gold vermeil over sterling silver will not — the base is pure silver even if the gold layer wears thin, and PVD coating ensures the gold layer is thick enough to last years rather than months. This is why The Jewelconic specifically uses sterling silver and stainless steel bases, never brass.

Earrings for Sensitive Ears

Earrings cause the most frequent skin reactions because the post goes directly through pierced skin — a route that bypasses the skin's normal barrier. For sensitive ears, the post material matters more than the visible front. Our Fossil Pearl Threader Earrings, Stella Gold Hoops, and all stud earrings use sterling silver or stainless steel posts with PVD coating — safe for newly pierced ears and highly sensitive skin alike.

If you have experienced reactions to jewellery before, The Jewelconic is a safe choice — and if you do experience any reaction, our 6-month warranty covers it.
