You spent a little time dreaming about it, a little (lot) of time obsessing over it and now you’ve decided to take the plunge. So now that you’ve committed, you’re probably wondering how to keep your jewellery in your life for as long as possible! Well rest assured that the best way to look after your jewellery is about to be explained to you so take a seat, pop on your Franc, and be prepared to be educated!
Jewellery is not just an accessory; it’s an investment and a reflection of your personal style. Our jewellery is designed for everyday wear, but like all precious metals, it needs a little love to maintain its "just out of the box" shine. Here is our guide to caring for your gold vermeil and sterling silver:

1. Understanding Water-Resistant vs. Waterproof

While our pieces are high-quality and water-resistant (perfect for a quick shower or a workout), we recommend avoiding prolonged exposure to chlorine or salt water. If you do take your jewels for a dip in the ocean, or you’ve ended up in the shower and realised you’re still wearing your plated pieces (we’ve all been there), just take a deep breath, remove your piece and leave it to dry until you’re done, simply rinse them with fresh water afterward and pat them dry. Tarnishing is not a manufacturing fault, it's simply to lack of caring for the pieces.

2. The "Last On, First Off" Rule

When wearing and handling your jewellery to protect the 14K and 18k gold plating, your jewellery should be the last thing you put on in the morning and the first thing you take off at night. Keep these practices in mind:

  • Apply first - Makeup, perfumes, lotions, and hairsprays, this is to avoid residue build up.

  • Put on last - Your Jewelconic pieces. This prevents chemicals from reacting with the metal.

  • Remove when necessary - Take off your jewellery when swimming, exercising, or doing household chores to prevent damage.

  • Lastly be mindful of heat - Avoid exposing your jewellery to extreme heat, which can weaken settings and damage stones.

3. Cleaning at Home

You don’t need fancy cleaners! To keep your jewellery looking it's best, regular cleaning id crucial. Here are some tips:

  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth (like a microfiber or glasses cloth) to gently buff your pieces after wearing, this removes oils and dirt that can dull it's shine.

  • For a deeper clean, use lukewarm water and a tiny drop of mild dish soap. Pat dry immediately—never leave your jewellery to air dry.

  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Stay away from bleach, ammonia, and other harsh chemicals that can damage your jewellery.

4. Jewellery Storage is Key

Proper storage is key to preventing scratches and tangles. When you aren't wearing your pieces, store them in your Jewelconic pouch or box or a lined jewellery box. Keeping them in a cool, dry place prevents oxidation and keeps them organised and seperate from scratching against other items. Avoid humidity, keeping your jewellery in a dry safe place as humidity can tarnish metals and damage stones.

FAQ JEWELLERY

WHAT IS 14K/18K GOLD-FILLED?

To make gold-fill jewellery, multiple layers of solid gold are pressure-bonded to a core of high-quality jeweller’s brass using extreme heat. The result is a thick layer of real gold and a durable, long-lasting product.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOLD-FILLED AND GOLD-PLATED?

Gold-plated pieces are typically the least expensive option, but offer lower quality- these pieces could easily chip or flake and there are few standards about what base metal can be used. Gold-filled pieces will not chip or flake, and are much more durable and long-lasting. Also, the standards for 14k gold-filled are strictly regulated, while the standards for gold-plated encompass a broad range of thicknesses, so you can't be sure how much gold is in the plated layer.

IS 14K/18K GOLD-FILLED GOOD QUALITY?

Gold-filled is absolutely your best option after solid gold for quality and durability. It will not flake off or turn your skin green and offers a great option for people with sensitive skin. Gold-filled jewellery can stay beautiful for a lifetime, especially with a little care.

IS GOLD-FILLED JEWELLERY OKAY FOR PEOPLE WITH SENSITIVE SKIN?

Yes it is- 99.9% of people find they have no sensitivity to gold-filled jewellery.  As the outside layer of the piece is solid 14k gold, it interacts with your skin in the same way solid 14k gold would.  If you do not have any sensitivities to solid gold, you will find gold-filled agrees well with your skin.

WHAT IS STERLING SILVER?

Sterling silver consists of 92.5% pure silver and is considered a precious metal. The other 7.5% of the alloy is usually copper, which strengthens the silver without compromising its appearance.

WHAT IS STAINLESS STEEL?

Stainless steel jewellery is a type of jewellery made from high-quality steel alloy. It is known for its durability, resistance to corrosion, and ability to retain its shine and luster over time.  Is extremely durable, scratch resistant, does not tarnish, water-resistant and PVD coating bond is much harder and long lasting than traditional plating.

CAN I SHOWER IN MY JEWELLERY?

Yes! Showering is actually great to clean gold-filled jewellery, however, make sure that your shampoos and soaps are gentle as certain chemicals can negatively impact the look of the gold.  If you're not sure, take your jewellery off to shower.

Although we do recommend taking your Freshwater Pearl jewellery off to bathe/swim/shower, it is still completely fine to get them wet - we simply recommend giving the pearls a little clean every few months using a soft toothbrush, to ensure no dust builds up around the edges, which will keep them looking brand new and shiny.

CAN I EXERCISE IN MY JEWELLERY?

Absolutely, but we recommend avoiding this, to ensure to not accidentally pull/tug on your jewellery, whilst exercising

MY JEWELLERY/PIERCING HAS IRRITATED MY SKIN, IS THIS NORMAL?

There is an extremely small chance that our jewellery materials themselves will cause any irritation to the skin, due to our products being of the highest quality, however, no two-skins are the same, and irritations can unfortunately sometimes happen. Please note that unless you are allergic to the metal type (this is very rare), irritations are mainly due to outside factors- e.g. failing to take hygiene precautions when placing the jewellery on, accidentally hitting or bumping the pierced area, wearing tight clothes which rub on the pierced area, etc. Other outside factors such as personal medications, perspiration, perfumes, cleaning agents, chlorine, salt water, and silver polish, may also have an impact on how your skin reacts to the jewellery, however, the chances of this happening are extremely small. Due to these factors being outside of our control, we cannot be held responsible if an irritation occurs, as we cannot know what caused the irritation.

HOW SHOULD I CLEAN MY FRESHWATER PEARL JEWELLERY?

To keep them looking shiny and brand-new for as long as possible, prevent your freshwater pearls from being exposed to water, makeup, creams, chemicals and cleaning agents. Freshwater pearls cannot withstand silver polish, and some purple shampoos. Do not use a silver-polishing cloth as it may dull your pearls. Instead we recommend mild soap mixed with warm water. Use your fingers to gently clean your jewellery. Do not use a brush. Pat dry and lay flat until completely dry.
